Barbara Kemp Cowlin

Area of Operation: Arizona, Southwest

Barbara Kemp Cowlin creates acrylic paintings of inconspicuous spaces in public places whose quiet and unnoticed beauty captivates her. She is fascinated by water reflections, rough and smooth textures juxtaposed together, light and shadow, edges and unsettling perspective. Over the years her art practice has included work in painting, printmaking and bookmaking. She works in series, and is currently madly at work on her water reflection paintings. She's had two solo shows in 2015 with a third one coming up in September. Cowlin earned a BFA and an MA in Community College Education majoring in Printmaking from Northern Arizona University, post-graduate studies in bookmaking at Arizona State University. She received her K-12 Art Teaching Certification from the University of Phoenix. Teaching experience includes college, community college and high school through elementary school, as well as workshops for adults. Currently Barbara’s art practice consists of painting full time in her studio across the courtyard from her home in Oracle, Arizona, just north of Tucson in the foothills of the Catalina Mountains. Her teaching is focused on workshops both in her studio and around the state. Workshops include all levels of acrylic painting, drawing, art fundamentals, bookmaking, printmaking and classes on creativity. Her workshops are casual, comfortable and packed with ideas and inspiration. The workshops are tailored to the needs of her students whether they are just beginning to explore art creation or need help advancing to the next skill level.
