Paint Products:

  • Slow-Dry Fluid Acrylic Colors*

Brushes and Tools:

  • Basic brushes
  • Badger Softener Brush (optional)

Painting Instructions:

This technique simulates a fantasy onyx.  Please see the book,
The Art of Faux, by Pierre Finkelstein for further technical instruction.

Step 1.  Pick up a few selected Slow-Dry Fluid Acrylic colors on your brush at one time.  Pick a point on your surface from where you’ll create a center or “heart” of the onyx.  Brush the colors across the surface at a slight angle around the “heart,” with one stroke, while moving the brush back and forth creating a soft, jagged line.  Continue applying different amounts of color to create an onyx pattern.

Step 2.  Use the Badger Softener brush and soften in one direction away from the “center.”   Allow to dry.

Clean Up:  Wash hands and tools in soap and water.  Keep tools wet while working to prevent permanent adhesion of the acrylic materials.

Surface Preparation:

General: A clean, wax free, non-greasy surface is recommended.  High gloss surfaces may need scuffing to improve adhesion.  GOLDEN Glaze is formulated to work best over a satin sheen base coat.  Gels and texture products may be put over any sheen base coat.

Masonry/Stucco: New masonry needs to be fully cured and primed with a suitable masonry primer.

Wood: Raw wood may be painted or stained directly, but be aware that water based materials can cause grain raising.  See “General” instructions above for guidance on previously painted surfaces.

Metal: Painting direct to metal requires a suitable primer for the specific metal type.  See “General” instructions above for guidance on previously painted surfaces.

Glass: Painting direct to glass is possible; primers and GOLDEN GAC 200 aid in adhesion.

Fabric, Canvas, and Paper: Paint direct or use GOLDEN Mediums as a size, to increase launderability or seal the surface.

Important: Golden Artist Colors provides these recipes as points of departure for exploring Golden products in faux finishing applications.

GOLDEN strongly recommends samples be created before attempting to apply these techniques to walls, some techniques will be difficult to remove or to cover at a later date.

Please contact the technical support team before application if there are concerns or questions at 1-800-959-6543.
