Paint Products:

  • Base coat: Valspar EE2073B Luminary
  • Metallic wall paint: Valspar EE2094 Gold Leaf
  • GOLDEN Products:
    • Light Molding Paste
    • Fluid Iridescent Gold (Fine)
    • Burnt Umber Glaze
Brushes and Tools:
  • Roller covers – 2
  • Texture blade or palette or spackle knife
  • House paintbrushes
  • Foam brush/basic brush
  • Cotton rag

Painting Instructions:

Step 1. Roll base coat over surface and allow to dry.

Step 2. Roll metallic wall paint over surface and allow to dry.

Step 3. Use a blade to apply Light Molding Paste in a checkerboard pattern.  Every other block should be directed vertically and horizontally.  In our sample, we did not apply it 100% across each block and instead allowed most of the metallic wall paint to show through (each block is roughly 75% wall paint and 25% Light Molding Paste).  Allow these to dry.

Step 4. Thin down Iridescent Gold with water and brush over the whole surface.  Allow surface to dry.

Step 5.  Brush on the Burnt Umber Glaze over 100% of the surface and wipe off excess in the same direction as the Faux Gold Leaf sheets were applied.  Next, rub/brush on Iridescent Gold to create bright highlights.

Clean Up:  Wash hands and tools in soap and water.  Keep tools wet while working to prevent permanent adhesion of the acrylic materials.

Surface Preparation:

General: A clean, wax free, non-greasy surface is recommended.  High gloss surfaces may need scuffing to improve adhesion.  GOLDEN Glaze is formulated to work best over a satin sheen base coat.  Gels and texture products may be put over any sheen base coat.

Masonry/Stucco: New masonry needs to be fully cured and primed with a suitable masonry primer.

Wood: Raw wood may be painted or stained directly, but be aware that water based materials can cause grain raising.  See “General” instructions above for guidance on previously painted surfaces.

Metal: Painting direct to metal requires a suitable primer for the specific metal type.  See “General” instructions above for guidance on previously painted surfaces.

Glass: Painting direct to glass is possible; primers and GOLDEN GAC 200 aid in adhesion.

Fabric, Canvas, and Paper: Paint direct or use GOLDEN Mediums as a size, to increase launderability or seal the surface.

Important: Golden Artist Colors provides these recipes as points of departure for exploring Golden products in faux finishing applications.

GOLDEN strongly recommends samples be created before attempting to apply these techniques to walls, some techniques will be difficult to remove or to cover at a later date.

Please contact the technical support team before application if there are concerns or questions at 1-800-959-6543.
