Paint Products:

  • Base coat: Valspar Sand Drift
  • Metallic wall paint: Modern Masters Champagne Color
  • GOLDEN Products:
    • Regular Gel (Gloss)
    • Heavy Body: Interference Blue (Fine)
    • Interference Green (Fine)
    • Interference Orange (Fine)
Brushes and Tools:
  • Roller covers - 2
  • Putty knife
  • Round brush
  • Rags

Painting Instructions:

Step 1. Roll base coat over surface and allow to dry.

Step 2. Roll metallic wall paint over surface and allow to dry.

Step 3.  Apply Regular Gel to the surface using the putty knife.  This layer should have a varied thickness, allowing more and less of the metallic paint to show through in different areas.  Next, draw small fan like strokes using the tip of a round brush.  Begin at one edge and draw these strokes in rows.  Overlap the brush marks so that the beginning and end of each stroke is covered by those in the next row. This will remove some of the gel, which should be wiped off onto a paper towel.  When the drawing is complete, allow the surface to dry.

Step 4.  Using a damp rag, rub the Interference colors over the surface in the following order: Interference Green over 100% of the surface; Interference Orange over 75% of the surface; and Interference Blue over 25% of the surface.  Allow each color to dry before applying the next.

Step 5.  Once the Interference color layer has dried, use the putty knife to apply a thin layer of Regular Gel over the entire surface. Regular Gel will fill in the low areas to make a flush top layer and will also impart a glossy sheen and enhanced deeper look to the interference surface.

Clean Up:  Wash hands and tools in soap and water.  Keep tools wet while working to prevent permanent adhesion of the acrylic materials.

Surface Preparation:

General: A clean, wax free, non-greasy surface is recommended.  High gloss surfaces may need scuffing to improve adhesion.  GOLDEN Glaze is formulated to work best over a satin sheen base coat.  Gels and texture products may be put over any sheen base coat.

Masonry/Stucco: New masonry needs to be fully cured and primed with a suitable masonry primer.

Wood: Raw wood may be painted or stained directly, but be aware that water based materials can cause grain raising.  See “General” instructions above for guidance on previously painted surfaces.

Metal: Painting direct to metal requires a suitable primer for the specific metal type.  See “General” instructions above for guidance on previously painted surfaces.

Glass: Painting direct to glass is possible; primers and GOLDEN GAC 200 aid in adhesion.

Fabric, Canvas, and Paper: Paint direct or use GOLDEN Mediums as a size, to increase launderability or seal the surface.

Important: Golden Artist Colors provides these recipes as points of departure for exploring Golden products in faux finishing applications.

GOLDEN strongly recommends samples be created before attempting to apply these techniques to walls, some techniques will be difficult to remove or to cover at a later date.

Please contact the technical support team before application if there are concerns or questions at 1-800-959-6543.
