Paint Products:

  • Fluid Acrylic Yellow Ochre
  • Fluid Acrylic Micaceous Iron Oxide
  • Fluid Acrylic Iridescent Gold (Fine)
  • Fluid Acrylic Raw Umber
  • Acrylic Glazing Liquid (Satin)
  • Regular Gel (Matte)

Brushes and Tools:

  • 3” Plastic Putty Knife
  • ¼” Tape
  • Small Color Wash Brush
  • Small Paint Brush
  • Cheesecloth
  • Foam Roller/Sponge Brush

Painting Instructions:

Step 1.  Using a foam roller/sponge brush, apply Fluid Yellow Ochre to basecoat the surface.  Allow to dry.

Step 2.  Tape off blocks using the ¼” tape as desired. (Measure to make things even.)

Step 3.  Mix Regular Gel (Matte) and Fluid Iridescent Gold (Fine) at a 2:1 ratio.  Using the putty knife, apply mixture covering one of the taped off blocks.  Using the same putty knife drag the product in a horizontal direction making a 3” x 3” square.  (Go left to right across the block.)  Next make a square dragging in a vertical direction and repeat this until all the blocks are filled in with 3” x 3” squares.  Allow to dry.

Step 4.   Mix the Acrylic Glazing Liquid and the Fluid Micaceous Iron Oxide at a 2:1 ratio and do the same, using the Acrylic Glazing Liquid and Fluid Raw Umber.  Using each mixture separately, carefully apply one color to the first block using a small color wash brush or a large color wash brush depending on how large the blocks are (left to right, top to bottom).  Use cheesecloth to soften and remove excess color.  Try to leave color around each small square inside each block and remove color from the center of these squares.  This will highlight the area and add depth.  Repeat process with the other color in alternating blocks.  Allow to dry.

Step 5.  Pull the tape up from each block (sometimes an X-Acto blade may be needed to do this).  Using the same Raw Umber mixture from above, paint over the Fluid Yellow Ochre base to get desired look (lighter, darker).  Allow to dry.
