Painting Instructions:

Step 1: Roller Application Use a roller to apply the Venetian Plaster, taking care to load the roller as evenly as possible. As a general guideline, cover only 3-5 square feet at a time. The area should be odd-shaped so that the next section will fit well with no straight lines in the middle of the application. Use the blade to smooth out any roller marks. Holding the blade at a 30-45 degree angle, lightly swipe across the plaster in a criss-cross or "X" pattern. Be careful not to scrape plaster off but allow modulation and light texture to remain.

Step 2: Roller Application When the first application has dried completely, the plaster will be lighter in color and will no longer feel moist. Use the same technique in Step 1 to apply a second layer, using the roller and blade to cover any areas of the base coat that may be seen peeking through.

Step 3: Burnishing When the second coat is completely dry, scrape the blade across the surface to knock off any ridges or deposited material that may have accumulated. Continuing to swipe the blade across the surface will bring up a Dry Burnish, or a gloss effect, to the Venetian Plaster.

A higher gloss finish can be achieved with a Wet Burnish technique using just the blade and a little bit of plaster. Use a palette knife to apply the plaster to the blade. The amount of plaster on the blade should only be about the size of a quarter. At a very low angle to the wall surface, leaving just enough room for your thumb underneath the blade, spread the plaster. After each pass, stand the blade up and scrape off any excess, wiping it off on a paper towel. It is very important to keep the blade clean or else you can accumulate dry pieces and scratch your surface. When you can touch this layer and not get any on your hand but the plaster still feels damp, you are ready to Wet Burnish. Apply moderate pressure with the face of the blade, not digging into the surface but gliding over it using the same criss-cross motion as in steps 1 and 2. Continue to burnish until the Venetian Plaster takes on the high gloss appearance you desire.
