Traveling with Acrylics:

I am painting an exterior mural overseas. Are there restrictions for taking supplies aboard a plane?
We don't think you'll have any problems if you carry water-based acrylics along with you. We suggest you have packing lists and Material Data Safety Sheets. We can provide these for you when you order.

We suggest for outdoor murals to use our MSA Varnish over acrylics as it offers excellent protection from ultraviolet light and other environmental problems. However, this is a mineral spirit based product and would not be allowed on airlines, and is extremely expensive to ship regardless method.

GOLDEN Paints should hold up well by themselves, but the following steps should be done. First, sand the surface until the existing paint is dull. You don't need to embed deep scratches, just dull it with 220 to 440 grit sandpaper. Wipe the surface down with a damp cloth and inspect for peeling paint, oily areas, etc.

Second, mix the paints with GOLDEN GAC 200, a hard acrylic medium that will promote better adhesion, make the paints harder, and also extend them.

Third, select only pigments lightfastness rated I (excellent), and avoid Cadmiums and Ultramarine Blue, as these colors do not do well in exterior or exposed environments. Estimate about 400-sq. ft. per gallon, which is after you blend with GAC 200. One gallon of GAC 200 mixed with one gallon of Phthalo Blue will cover around 800 square feet. Because you can't really varnish over these murals, try to be a little heavy handed as you paint, so if fading does occur, the underlying pigments will keep the mural looking good.
