Mixed Media Murals:

I'm creating murals to be installed in a fine restaurant. The environment will probably vary significantly in temperature and humidity as it is nearly "tropical." Works may need periodical cleaning due to presence of food, smoke, and human activity. I plan to construct the murals using mixed media starting with graphite over watercolor wash, then archival inks, then finished with opaque and glazed layers of Acrylic paints.
We'd advise to try to not use true watercolors for the washes, as it will only add to the complexity of the work. We would strongly suggest using GOLDEN Fluid Acrylics for the washes. The main difference between these and watercolor paints is the binder. Gum arabic is water resoluble and will be difficult to seal with other acrylics without some color movement or bleeding. The Fluids cannot be resolublized by working back into them with water or another wash, therefore when sealing them off with something like Matte Medium, they will not be susceptible to movement or lifting. How will you be applying the archival inks and what are they made of? GOLDEN Airbrush Colors can be used in technical pens and fountain pens, or brush applied. These are made with lightfast pigments, so at least make sure the archival inks are as well. Acrylic Glazing Liquid will allow open time for glazing application of acrylic paints.

Once the artistic applications are complete, apply an "isolation coat" over the artwork. For this, the GOLDEN Soft Gel Gloss thinned with water 2:1 works very well. This mixture also works well as a fast drying glaze. The isolation coat seals off the artwork and evens out the finish. Once this dries for at least 24 hours, apply GOLDEN MSA Varnish over the work. MSA Offers UV protection, comes in gloss, satin and matte (all are intermixable), and can be removed for cleaning and restoration purposes. The MSA Varnish is durable enough to withstand general cleaning, but if there is excessive smoke/grime accumulation, it can be removed and a new coat applied at a later date.
