FAQ: GOLDEN Gels & Mediums
GOLDEN GELS & MEDIUMS
Printer Friendly VersionPrinter Friendly Version
Mixtures with Mediums:

Can you use Gels and Mediums by themselves, or just mixed with paints?
The versatility of acrylics allows the artist almost complete freedom to mix and blend paints and mediums or even mediums and mediums without problems. Gels and Mediums allow an artist to create unique textures in a painting as well as very smooth films depending on their needs. One of the things to remember though is you'll get the best results when trying to mix products more similar in regard to characteristics, mainly viscosity. When you want to alter just one attribute, and keep the other characteristics the same, choosing the product with the highest degree of the quality you desire is best. For instance, the best choice for making something more matte is the Super Loaded Matte Medium, as it has the highest concentration of matting solids of any product made by GOLDEN. Likewise, thickening a Fluid with Extra Heavy Gel will result in maintaining the pigment load, as you will add just a small amount to thicken the Fluid up. However, it's tougher to mix in evenly because of their differences.
