FAQ: GOLDEN Fluid Acrylics
GOLDEN FLUID ACRYLICS
Characteristics of Fluid Acrylics:

Are GOLDEN Fluid Acrylics just watered down versions of Heavy Body Acrylics?
Absolutely NOT! Fluids are unique in that they have very similar pigment loads to the Heavy Body Acrylics. Acrylic paints are thickened with "alkali-swellable" thickeners, not from the amount of pigment in it. Thickness does not tell you how much pigment is in the paint. Fluids were made for artists who wanted thin paints and high pigment loads for staining, spraying and watercolor effects. Their consistency is ideal for painting right out of the container and they blend incredibly easily.

Why are there fewer colors in the Fluid Line than Heavy Body Acrylics?
The Fluid formulations are very tricky, and many inorganic pigments are too heavy to be put into such a thin paint line. Other pigments are just stubborn. They are difficult to keep stable in our Heavy Body line, let alone the Fluids. As we discover pigments that meet our strict standards, they will be added into this versatile line.

When I brush out the Fluids, why do they seem to have less covering power than the Heavy Bodies?
While the Fluids have the same pigment load as the Heavy Body Paints, their thin viscosity can prevent you from applying them thick enough for opaque coverage. Either apply them in several thin coats or add a Gel to increase their thickness. Another way to create more even applications with better opacity is to add Super Loaded Matte Medium to them. The matting solids may lower the chroma slightly, but the change is less dramatic than if you were to add Titanium White. It's also thicker than the Fluids and will increase the body of them.

Are Fluid Acrylics ready to spray?
Not unless you plan on spraying at about 80 p.s.i.! However, adding GOLDEN Airbrush Medium (start at equal parts) will make them thin enough to spray, nonclogging, and create a durable film that resists sagging and the dreaded "fish-eyes". This mix creates the best airbrush fabric paint on the market, bar none! It is also excellent for automotive, signage, fine art and other applications. For commercial art, where "friskiting" and other masking techniques are essential, blend with the GOLDEN Airbrush Transparent Extender.
